Why this site?

Here at What if they were Muslim we question what would happen if a Jewish, Christian, Hindu, ______(insert religion of choice) were to commit a crime in the name of their faith. Would it be treated the same way if a Muslim committed the exact same crime? Would very little emphasis be put on the perpetrators religion? Would it be stressed that the act is an aberration, a misrepresentation of the religion? Would the religion be mentioned at all?

Another Tid-Bit...

WITWM is not a site that opines on the “what if” scenario of your favorite Hollywood star being a Muslim. It has nothing to do with Angelina Jolie or Johnny Depp, etc. It has everything to do with the double standards in both media and pop culture that perpetuate the myth that Islam is inherently more violent than other religions or the root cause of misdeeds by Muslims.

High School Student Brought Loaded AK-47 To School: Police

High School Student Brought Loaded AK-47 To School: Police

The Huffington Post  | by  Emily Thomas

A 17-year-old student allegedly brought three loaded guns, including an AK-47, and a knife to his Texas school Monday morning.

James Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas, was placed on lockdown until the unidentified student, who also had additional ammunition in his backpack, was taken into custody. No injuries were reported at the school of over 3,200 students, according to The Associated Press.

KSAT News reports the boy’s parents woke up Monday and discovered that their son and three of their guns were gone from their home. When they went to his school, they found their son on campus and then sat down with administrators, at which point they checked his backpack and discovered the ammo and two of the three guns. A third gun was found in a bathroom trash can, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

North East Independent School District spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor said it is unclear exactly what the student planned to do with the weapons.

“The student had said that he planned making some demands over the announcements later today at Madison High School,” she told local outlet KSAT Monday. “He didn’t say specifically what those demands were, but he did say if those demands were not met, he had planned on committing violence.”

Monday’s incident comes days after the school district received an anonymous threat via email that a mass shooting would take place last Thursday, according to San Antonio Express-News.

U.S. Right Wing Extremists More Deadly Than Jihadists

Frazier_Glenn_Cross

The following article by Peter Bergen is pretty good though it fails to explicitly describe the attack on the Jewish Community Centers as ‘terrorist attacks.’

U.S. right wing extremists more deadly than jihadists

(CNN) – On Sunday, a man shot and killed a 14-year-old boy and his grandfather at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City and then drove to a nearby Jewish retirement community where he shot and killed a third person. Police arrested a suspect, Frazier Glenn Cross, who shouted “Heil Hitler” after he was taken into custody.

Cross, who also goes by Frazier Glenn Miller, is a well-known right wing extremist who founded the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and the White Patriot Party, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Now let’s do the thought experiment in which instead of shouting “Heil Hitler” after he was arrested, the suspect had shouted “Allahu Akbar.” Only two days before the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, this simple switch of words would surely have greatly increased the extent and type of coverage the incident received.

Yet the death toll in the shootings in Kansas is similar to that of last year’s Boston Marathon bombings, where three people were killed and the suspects later killed a police officer as they tried to evade capture. (Many more, of course, were also wounded in the Boston attacks; 16 men, women and children lost limbs.)

In fact, since 9/11 extremists affiliated with a variety of far-right wing ideologies, including white supremacists, anti-abortion extremists and anti-government militants, have killed more people in the United States than have extremists motivated by al Qaeda’s ideology. According to a count by the New America Foundation, right wing extremists have killed 34 people in the United States for political reasons since 9/11. (The total includes the latest shootings in Kansas, which are being classified as a hate crime).

Robert James Talbot: Texas Patriot Terrorist Said it Was the Will of God to Bomb Federal Buildings

I wonder why we haven’t heard more about this guy and isn’t it curious that he isn’t described as a terrorist?

He believed that “stopping the regime with action by bloodshed,” was the “will of God.”

HOUSTON -

A Katy man is expected to appeared in federal court Friday to face several charges, including possession of explosive materials.

Robert James Talbot Jr., 38, was arrested Thursday following an eight-month undercover investigation by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

Authorities allege Talbot wanted to recruit other “like-minded individuals” to blow up government buildings, rob banks and kill law enforcement officers.

According to the criminal complaint, Talbot created a Facebook page titled “American Insurgent Movement” (AIM), and described it as “a Pre-Constitutionalist Community that offers those who seek True patriotism and are looking for absolute Freedom by doing the Will of God. Who want to restore America Pre-Constitutionally and look forward to stopping the Regime with action by bloodshed.”

The criminal complaint also states Talbot made several postings on the page between Jan. 30 and Feb. 9, 2014, seeking people interested in “walking away from your life…to stop the regime.”

According to the complaint, Talbot posted to the page on March 15 which read:

“In a few weeks me and my team are goin active for Operation Liberty…I will not be able to post no more.  We will be the revolution, things will happen nation wide or in the states.  They will call us many names and spin things around on media.  Just remember we fight to stop Marxism, liberalism, Central banking Cartels and the New World Order.  I will try to find someone to take over this community page, but most of the guys who are admins are part of my unit.  I will have a website up in 2 months…The funding is unlimited since the banking cartel will be forced to fund our movements.”

The complaint alleges Talbot sent $500 as a down payment for the explosive devices he had requested on March 22.

Then on March 27, the complaint states Talbot and others met at a storage facility in Houston with the intent to conduct an armor car robbery. Authorities allege Talbot provided detailed maps of the target bank, an escape route, and placed two explosive devices made of C4 into his black backpack to then be placed on the armor car.

Talbot was arrested on the way to conduct the robbery by the FBI Houston Division Special Weapons and Tactics team.

He is charged with attempted interference with commerce by robbery, solicitation to commit a crime of violence and possession of an explosive material, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“I believe this kid was as savvy or maybe more savvy than Timothy McVeigh, honestly I do. If he had a Terry Nichols with him, who knows what he would do?” said Terry Denny, who lived in the same boarding house as Talbot.

Denny said Talbot spent large amounts of time watching anti-government videos, and frequently talked about a cache of weapons stored in New York, although it was unclear Friday if that cache actually existed.

If convicted, authorities say Talbot faces up to a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a possible $250,000 fine for the attempted robbery, as well as another 10 years imprisonment and $100,000 fine for each of the remaining charges.

Talbot will spend the weekend in federal custody. He will see a judge on Tuesday.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force with their investigation, including personnel from the FBI, U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service, U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Secret Service, Houston and Houston Metro Police Departments and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Feds indict Klansman trying to build an anti-Muslim X-ray cannon

Feds indict Klansman trying to build an anti-Muslim X-ray cannon

(RawStory)

Federal prosecutors moved forward with a terrorism case against a purported Klansman who had been soliciting money from Jewish businessmen to build a bizarre — but technologically feasible — X-ray cannon intended to secretly kill Muslims.

Eric J. Feight, 55 pleaded guilty Wednesday to domestic terrorism-related charges in a federal courtroom in Albany, N.Y., and faces up to 15 years in prison. His alleged co-conspirator, Glendon Scott Crawford, 49, pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday after being indicted on three federal felony counts. The indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Albany, New York last week charged Crawford with attempting to produce and use a radiological dispersal device, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, and distributing information relating to weapons of mass destruction.

The Times-Union of Albany reported that Feight and his lawyers may seek a plea agreement in exchange for testimony against Crawford.

Investigators began looking at Crawford in April 2012, after the self-described Klansman approached a Schenectady synagogue, looking for financial support to build the radiation device.

“Crawford planned to create a mobile, remotely operated, radiation-emitting device capable of killing people silently from a distance with lethal doses of ionizing radiation,” according to the indictment. “Crawford’s intended targets were Muslims, Muslim-related organizations and persons Crawford believed were contributing to the demise of the United States.”

Crawford struck out in New York, then went to North Carolina looking for backing. The FBI had been tracking him at this point, notes the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Crawford “described to the [undercover FBI agents] his radiation emitting device, his remote initiation device, mobilizing the radiation device and discussed operation security concerns,” a criminal complaint filed last June said. “Crawford again solicited money to finance his scheme (primarily to fund the purchase or acquisition of an industrial strength x-ray system).”

Man found with pipe bomb at Edmonton airport allowed to fly

An 18-year-old man who was allowed to get on a flight at Edmonton International Airport in September after he was caught bringing a pipe bomb to security has been sentenced for possession of an explosive device.

Skylar Vincent Murphy was caught with the pipe bomb on Sept. 20. Security took the explosive away, but Murphy was given the go-ahead to continue on his flight.

Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) alerted RCMP to the case four days later. Murphy was arrested by Leduc RCMP on Sept. 27.

In an email response to questions from CBC News, CATSA spokesman Mathieu Larocque did not address why Murphy was allowed to get on the plane.

“Screening officers do not have the authority to apprehend or detain passengers,” he wrote. “When they see something potentially illegal, the(y) contact the police.”

On Dec. 5, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year probation and a $100 fine.

He is also prohibited from possessing explosives, firearms or ammunition for one year, and must also make a $500 donation to the University of Alberta burn unit.

Indiana man allegedly had 48 bombs, 4 guns in car in Ohio

LONDON, Ohio, Jan. 7 (UPI) – An Indiana man pulled over for speeding in Ohio had 48 bombs and four guns in his car, authorities allege.

Andrew Scott Boguslawski, 43, Morris Hill, has been jailed on $1 million bond since his New Year’s Day arrest on a count of illegal manufacture or processing of explosives. He is to appear in court Friday for a preliminary hearing, the Madison Press in London, Ohio, reported Monday.

“I think there is a significant risk to the public,” Assistant Madison County Prosecutor Nick Adkins said, referring the high bond. “Until we can sort through the facts of this case, and what we have here and what his intent was, it is necessary to keep the public safe.”

Boguslawski was stopped by state troopers while westbound on Interstate 70 in Madison County for allegedly driving 85 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone.

Adkins said Trooper William Davis took notice of several bumper stickers on Boguslawski’s car, including one stating, “If you can read this, you’re in range,” and asked him if there were any weapons in the vehicle.

Boguslawski allegedly answered no and Davis stepped away to write a ticket, the Madison Press reported. When the trooper returned to Boguslawski’s car he spotted the handle of a gun between the man’s knees, Adkins said.

“At that point, he drew his service weapon, held the man there and called for backup,” said Adkins.

A subsequent search turned up the four weapons, 48 explosive devices, and tools and materials to make more bombs, Adkins said.

“Most concerning to me was that they found a remote detonating device,” Adkins said.

“The majority of the devices, I would not classify as high tech, but some of the devices were set up to be activated with the remote detonator.”

Adkins said Boguslawski, who didn’t make any statement to investigators, works at a training facility for Navy SEALs in Indiana and does not have “any real criminal history.”

Investigators were trying to determine why he had the bombs and were “looking for a link to any known terrorist operations and to identify the intended target.”

Oregon Youth Is Accused of Plotting School Attack

Oregon Youth Is Accused of Plotting School Attack

By

Law enforcement officials in Oregon say they have disrupted a plot by a student to set off explosives at his high school in what one official described on Sunday as a “video-game style of killing people” reminiscent of the Columbine High School massacre.

The suspect, Grant A. Acord, 17, was arrested Thursday at his home in Albany, Ore., said John Haroldson, the district attorney of Benton County. Mr. Haroldson said in an interview that the police had confiscated several explosive devices and that Mr. Acord appeared to be trying to get more weapons.

“We intervened on this before he could get all the materials that he wanted,” Mr. Haroldson said. “The full-blown plan would have involved even more bombs. It would have involved rifles.”

He said Mr. Acord would be formally charged on Tuesday.

Investigators believe that the intended target was West Albany High School, where Mr. Acord is a student. After the arrest, officers searched the school for explosives but found none.

“The initial security search will be followed up by a more extensive school search, which will include the use of an explosives detection K-9 from the Oregon State Police, to ensure that the campus is safe for students’ return to class on Tuesday,” an Albany Police Department statement said.

Albany, a city of about 50,000 people, is 70 miles from Portland.

The police began their investigation after receiving a tip “that associated Grant Acord with manufacturing a destructive device with the intent of detonating it at a school,” the statement said.

As of Sunday, any motives were unclear. Mr. Acord’s family has made no public statements.

The authorities would not say when the attack was to be carried out, but Mr. Haroldson said the police had recovered a detailed checklist and a timeline. He said no single person appeared to be the target.

Mr. Haroldson also said Mr. Acord had taken a “substantial step towards carrying out the crime,” but would give no further details.

Number of Anti-Government Groups Hits Record High

The number of conspiracy-peddling anti-government groups hit a record high last year, according to a report put out Tuesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which also found that hate groups in general remain at near-record levels.

Between 2000 and 2012, the number of hate groups, defined the by SPLC as those that verbally attack minority groups, rose from 602 to more than 1,000. The number declined slightly last year—from 1,018 to 1,007—but the number of so-called “patriot groups,” groups that generally believe the government is conspiring to take Americans’ guns and freedoms and impose one-world rule, hit a record high of 1,360 in 2012, up from 149 in 2008.

“We are seeing the fourth straight year of really explosive growth on the part of anti-government patriot groups and militias,” Mark Potok, senior fellow at the SPLC said on a conference call Tuesday. “That’s 913 percent in growth. We’ve never seen that kind of growth in any kind of group we cover.”

Why so much hate and paranoia? The culprits are pretty predictable: a liberal black president, the wider shift in demographics in the country, and the mainstreaming of formerly marginal conspiracies like Agenda 21, says Potok.

Although these groups aren’t necessarily involved in violence or criminality, their rise still has advocates worried. “Only a small percentage acts violently, but they should raise red flags and cause concern,” Daryl Johnson, former senior domestic terrorism analyst at the Department of Homeland Security, said during the conference call. And Potok says that immigration reform, gun control legislation, and the increasing social acceptance of LGBT rights have the potential to further fuel growth of these groups.

On Tuesday, the SPLC sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security urging it to amp up its non-Islamic domestic terrorism monitoring. The agency has done a lot less monitoring on non-Islamic terror since 2009, when a leaked DHS report revealing a resurgence of the radical right caused an uproar amongst GOP lawmakers and right-wing talk show hosts. The controversy spurred Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano to withdraw the report and dismantle the domestic non-Islamic terrorism unit that had written it.

Johnson, whose team at DHS wrote the report, says that since then, “nothing at the Department of Homeland Security regarding this issue has changed. DHS has one or two analysts looking at right-wing extremism. Meanwhile it has dozens of analysts and resources looking at home-grown Islamic extremists.”

“We need to stand up a domestic terrorism unit and start analyzing this threat,” he says.

FBI: Neo-Nazi amassed 40,000 rounds, 18 weapons in plot to kill black and Jewish leaders

FBI: Neo-Nazi amassed 40,000 rounds, 18 weapons in plot to kill black and Jewish leaders

By Arturo Garcia (Raw Story)

A convicted felon and alleged neo-Nazi amassed 40,000 rounds of ammunition and planned to kill black and Jewish community leaders in Detroit as part of a “hit list,” WXYZ-TV reported on Thursday.

Federal authorities said this week that a search of 47-year-old federal suspect Richard Schmidt’s home revealed the list and apparent plans to kill Scott Kaufman, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, and Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

“You have to realize it is the world we live in,” said Kaufman after being notified of the list. “There are people who don’t like us and would just as soon have us not exist, but you can’t dwell on it.”

According to NBC News, Schmidt was indicted in January 2013 on federal charges of possessing firearms, ammunition and body armor, all of which violated his parole. Schmidt was released from prison in 2003, after 13 years of incarceration in Ohio following a homicide conviction for shooting and killing a man during a traffic stop. Schmidt also wounded two others during that attack.

Investigators then found 18 weapons inside Schmidt’s home in Ohio in December 2012, including various types of shotguns and high-caliber rifles, including two different AR-15 assault weapons.

U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach, who represents Ohio’s northern district, said investigators have concluded that Schmidt acquired his arsenal at gun shows or via private firearms sales, which currently do not require a background check.

“It’s scary,” Dettelback said about the amount of weaponry found at the suspect’s home, adding that while he would say where Schmidt bought the guns if he knew, “It’s that sitting here today as a senior federal law enforcement official in northern Ohio, I can’t say.”

Schmidt, who owns a sporting good store, is also accused of selling knock-offs of popular brands like Nike, Reebok and Louis Vuitton.

Watch WXYZ’s report on Schmidt’s alleged “kill list,” aired Thursday night, below.

Sikhs Against the EDL Call For Calm After Mob Attacked Restaurant

I

A member of Sikhs Against the EDL contacted us with the following press release in regards to a saddening flare up in violence over false rumors regarding the alleged rape of a teenage Sikh girl.

We add our voice to that of Sikhs Against the EDL and likewise appeal for calm. Only Islamophobes and bigots of all kinds benefit from such hostility.:

‘Sikhs Against the EDL’ appeal for calm after a Muslim-owned restaurant attacked by 40-strong Sikh mob.

It has been reported in the media that the police and faith leaders in Leicester met last Thursday night to find ways of easing tensions after the ransacking of a Muslim-owned restaurant by a 40-strong Sikh mob.

The attack took place at the Moghul Durbar restaurant, in East Park Road, Spinney Hills, last Monday, 14th Jan, night. Some workers and diners were injured when the mob piled into the restaurant smashing doors and windows and three men were reported to have been hospitalised. Police has said they were worried the incident – which they said was fuelled by false rumours – would lead to revenge attacks and escalate as both groups sought retaliation.

City police commander Chief Superintendent Rob Nixon has said that Monday’s attack was sparked by misinformation regarding the rape of a teenage Sikh girl. “We are aware of a number of rumours and misinformation which is circulating within the communities in Leicester,” he told the Leicester Mercury.

“As part of a separate investigation, officers are speaking with a girl and her family in relation to concerns her family have raised for her welfare. We are unable to comment further on this investigation. “Leicestershire Police urges members of the community not to listen to rumour or speculate about the incident,” he added further.

It has now been reported that police have arrested five men and a youth in relation to their investigation of an alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl after her family raised concerns.

However, since the incident at the restaurant a number of shops have also been attacked in the area, including a Sikh owned shop, which have led to further appeals by the police for calm. Six men have now also been charged over the restaurant attack.

Balwinder Singh Rana, spokesperson for ‘Sikhs Against the EDL’, said, “We add our voice to that of the police and urge people to keep calm. If they have any concerns then they should report to the police and not try to take the law into their own hands.”

He further added,” Any such conflict between members of the Sikh and Muslim communities would only play into the hands of the racists like the English Defence League (EDL). They would try to exploit the situation for their own purposes.

Last year they tried to hijack a Sikh protest outside the police station in Luton and they are always looking for opportunities to ‘divide & rule’. “But when the racists and fascists attack us they do not distinguish between Sikhs and Muslims – as in the case of Wisconsin massacre last year. Furthermore, we should learn from what is happening in Greece today where the racists of the Golden Dawn have been attacking all immigrants whether they are Sikh, Hindu, Muslim or anyone else.

“That’s why the ‘Sikhs Against the EDL’ supported a protest outside the Greek embassy in London on Saturday 19th Jan, called by Unite Against Fascism (UAF) in solidarity with a major anti-fascist demonstration in Athens the same day. We wanted to show solidarity with all immigrants in Greece and warn people here that with the continued economic crisis and austerity plans in this country too, soon the home grown racists and fascists could also turn on all of us, unless we all unite to oppose them.”
