Why this site?

Here at What if they were Muslim we question what would happen if a Jewish, Christian, Hindu, ______(insert religion of choice) were to commit a crime in the name of their faith. Would it be treated the same way if a Muslim committed the exact same crime? Would very little emphasis be put on the perpetrators religion? Would it be stressed that the act is an aberration, a misrepresentation of the religion? Would the religion be mentioned at all?

Another Tid-Bit...

WITWM is not a site that opines on the “what if” scenario of your favorite Hollywood star being a Muslim. It has nothing to do with Angelina Jolie or Johnny Depp, etc. It has everything to do with the double standards in both media and pop culture that perpetuate the myth that Islam is inherently more violent than other religions or the root cause of misdeeds by Muslims.

Number of Anti-Government Groups Hits Record High

The number of conspiracy-peddling anti-government groups hit a record high last year, according to a report put out Tuesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which also found that hate groups in general remain at near-record levels.

Between 2000 and 2012, the number of hate groups, defined the by SPLC as those that verbally attack minority groups, rose from 602 to more than 1,000. The number declined slightly last year—from 1,018 to 1,007—but the number of so-called “patriot groups,” groups that generally believe the government is conspiring to take Americans’ guns and freedoms and impose one-world rule, hit a record high of 1,360 in 2012, up from 149 in 2008.

“We are seeing the fourth straight year of really explosive growth on the part of anti-government patriot groups and militias,” Mark Potok, senior fellow at the SPLC said on a conference call Tuesday. “That’s 913 percent in growth. We’ve never seen that kind of growth in any kind of group we cover.”

Why so much hate and paranoia? The culprits are pretty predictable: a liberal black president, the wider shift in demographics in the country, and the mainstreaming of formerly marginal conspiracies like Agenda 21, says Potok.

Although these groups aren’t necessarily involved in violence or criminality, their rise still has advocates worried. “Only a small percentage acts violently, but they should raise red flags and cause concern,” Daryl Johnson, former senior domestic terrorism analyst at the Department of Homeland Security, said during the conference call. And Potok says that immigration reform, gun control legislation, and the increasing social acceptance of LGBT rights have the potential to further fuel growth of these groups.

On Tuesday, the SPLC sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security urging it to amp up its non-Islamic domestic terrorism monitoring. The agency has done a lot less monitoring on non-Islamic terror since 2009, when a leaked DHS report revealing a resurgence of the radical right caused an uproar amongst GOP lawmakers and right-wing talk show hosts. The controversy spurred Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano to withdraw the report and dismantle the domestic non-Islamic terrorism unit that had written it.

Johnson, whose team at DHS wrote the report, says that since then, “nothing at the Department of Homeland Security regarding this issue has changed. DHS has one or two analysts looking at right-wing extremism. Meanwhile it has dozens of analysts and resources looking at home-grown Islamic extremists.”

“We need to stand up a domestic terrorism unit and start analyzing this threat,” he says.

Liberty University’s Guide to Female Modesty

At Jerry Falwell’s Liberty university it seems as if Salafi Muslims designed the handbook of student conduct. Here is a snippet of the handbook detailing what is deemed appropriate/inappropriate regarding women’s dress. The part of this that is most entertaining to us is that Liberty University is an Evangelical Christian institution, and while plenty of finger-pointing goes about in regards to Muslim women and their modest dress choices, it is never an issue when Christians seek to implement modest attire. Why is it that orthodox Muslims face such scrutiny, yet Christians, when doing something of a similar nature, get a free pass?

Liberty University’s Guide to Female Modesty

by Josh Glasstetter (rightwingwatch.org)
[This is part of a series of posts on Liberty University's student handbook, “The Liberty Way,” which governs what students can say, do, read, and watch – both on and off campus – and sets out a regimen of reprimands and fines for violators]
Liberty students are “expected to dress modestly at all times,” and the Liberty Way sets out guidelines for both men and women. However, in the long tradition of religious conservatives the world over, most of the focus is on women – and covering up their sinful bodies.
This screenshot from the Liberty website circa 2005 shows an example of how female students should dress:
The Liberty Way explains that the university “has established a standard of dress for the University community, which is conducive to a Christ-like environment. Cleanliness, neatness, appropriateness and modesty are important as guiding factors.” The women’s dress code includes, among others, the following restrictions and stipulations:
  • “Hair and clothing styles related to counterculture (as determined by the Deans’ Review Committee) are not acceptable.”
  • “Swimwear is only appropriate at the swimming pool. Students are to wear appropriate casual or sport attire (as stated in ‘The Liberty Way’) going to and from the pool. Women are required to wear a one-piece suit that is in good taste. Swimsuits that are see-through/mesh, expose the midriff and/or are low in the front or back or cut high on the legs are not acceptable.”
  • “Dresses and skirts should be no shorter than the top of the knee (sitting or standing). Skirt slits should be modest; open slits should be no higher than the top of the knee, closed slits should be no higher than two inches from the top of the knee. Shoulder straps should be no less than two inches wide. Anything tight, scant, backless, see-through, low in the neckline or revealing the midriff (in any position) is immodest and unacceptable.”
  • “Body piercing is not permitted. Earrings and plugs are permitted in ears only.”
  • “Students are expected to dress modestly for the Junior/Senior Banquet & the Minority Student Achievement Awards Banquet, as well as all formal events. Anything tight, scant, backless, see-through, low in the neckline or revealing the midriff is immodest and unacceptable. Slits should be no higher than the top of the knee. Strapless or spaghetti straps are acceptable for this event as long as the above standard is followed”
  • Class Dress: “Dresses, skirts, dress pants, shirts and/or sweaters (no jeans of any color, no overalls, no Capri/cropped pants, no shorts, no sweatshirts, no writing or graphics on shirts except for discreet embroidered logos), dress, casual or tennis shoes (no flip-flops of any style)”

Students are warded that “RA’s, RD’s, Deans and others will enforce dress code and educate all students regarding what is acceptable and what is not.” Back in 2004, and perhaps more recently, the administration made a helpful presentation on female modesty. Here are some highlights:

Border Vigilante Reportedly Plotted Deadly Raids On Latinos

Border vigilante and white supremacist JT Ready shown posing in front of a piece of U.S. Customs and Border Protection equipment in this undated photograph.

Another inroad into the saga of “Border Guard” and white supremacist J T Ready. Like Aziz Yazdanpanah, Ready recently killed his family in an apparent murder/suicide. When news of this broke, we asked the question “What if he were Muslim?” Now it is revealed that J T Ready was in the throes of organizing a killing spree against Latinos he perceived to be illegal immigrants into the United States… Ready continues to be excused for his beliefs and actions by being called a “fringe element” and a “white supremacist”, while if he were a Muslim the media would spin it that he was a terrorist. Is it just us, or is there a blatant double-standard?

Border Vigilante Reportedly Plotted Deadly Raids On Latinos

By Nick R. Martin (tpmmuckracker.com)

More than two years before white supremacist border vigilante JT Ready was involved in a deadly rampage in Arizona, the FBI was reportedly told he planned to lead deadly raids on Latino households in Phoenix.

According to the Phoenix New Times, a fellow border activist named David Heppler came forward in late 2009 when he became concerned about Ready’s increasingly erratic behavior. He said the well known white supremacist planned to dress up like an agent from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and lead attacks on Latino house parties with the intent to kill those in attendance.

Authorities believe Ready was the gunman in a mass murder-suicide on May 2 at a house in a suburb east of Phoenix. Investigators have said the massacre was a family argument that turned deadly when Ready opened fire on his girlfriend, her daughter, her daughter’s boyfriend and her daughter’s toddler before killing himself.

In the story the New Times published last week, journalist Stephen Lemons said Heppler first came to him with the concerns. But because the information involved potential harm to people’s lives, the journalist referred Heppler to a local cop, who in turn sent him to the FBI.

“Heppler agreed to become an informant (he says he was not paid) and agreed to wear a recording device and allow his phone to be tapped,” Lemons wrote.

Heppler told the newspaper, however, that he ended up having a fallout with the FBI after he blew his cover as a secret informant to one of Ready’s associates.

It’s unclear how credible Heppler’s claims were or how seriously the FBI took him. However, in an interview days after this month’s massacre, James Turgal, the lead agent in the FBI’s Phoenix office said investigators were looking at Ready as part of an ongoing domestic terrorism probe at the time of the killings.

Turgal said the agency was looking into possible shootings of immigrants in the desert as part of its investigation. Meanwhile, authorities in southern Arizona said last week they investigated Ready but ultimately cleared him in the killing of two immigrants north of Tucson. They said they believe the killings were the work of bandits or a rival smuggling cartel.

Ready was a longtime member of the National Socialist Movement, the largest neo-Nazi organization in the nation. In recent years, he founded a group called the U.S. Border Guard, which organized armed patrols in the Arizona desert. The group would search for immigrants and frequently hold them at gunpoint until legitimate law enforcement would arrive.

Ready also advocated for landmines to be used along the U.S.-Mexican border as a form of immigration control. At the scene of the massacre, federal authorities discovered at least six military-grade projectile grenades that were designed to pierce armor.

Israeli candidate running for Congress in Texas pledges to ‘stop Islamization of America’

Itamar Gelbman was born in New York 30 years ago and as a child moved with his parents to Herzliya, where he was raised. He studied business management and computer science at Tel Aviv University and served as an undercover reserve officer in the Tel Aviv Police District.

After graduation, Gelbman joined the IDF where he was a lieutenant in what he calls the “army special forces.” He said he could not be more specific about what he did in the army but that he received multiple awards, including a commendation from the IDF chief of staff.

Eight years ago, he moved to Texas. After US President Barack Obama was elected in 2008, Gelbman decided to get involved in politics.

Gelbman is running in the May 29 Republican Primary in Texas’s Sixth Congressional District, which is outside Dallas. “I’m the only candidate for the seat who is pro-Israel,” Gelbman said.

Gelbman said he believes American politicians need to give Israel the benefit of the doubt. He does not believe the US should involve itself in the settlement issue and he would work to block foreign aid to Islamic countries that act against Israel and the United States.

“I would defend Israel and be their voice in the House,” he said. “Israel should be allowed to do whatever it needs to do. The Palestinians need to change their education system and accept Israel as a Jewish state with Jerusalem as its capital.” Gelbman said he would work to make sure a law requiring the US to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem would be enforced.

He received national attention when Muslims in his district were offended by his campaign flyer in which vowed to “fight the Islamization of America.”

Gelbman recently came to Israel to spend Passover with family. While he was in the country, he met with MK Danny Danon and other Likud politicians.

Jerusalem Post, 7 May 2012

Not so sure about the “national attention” bit. The only report I can find of Gelbman antagonising the Muslim community is by a local TV station.

Border Guard founder J.T. Ready blamed in Arizona murder-suicide

What if J.T. Ready was named Aziz Yazdanpanah? Would this have been an honor killing?

Border Guard founder J.T. Ready blamed in Arizona murder-suicide

By Michael Muskal

Jason Todd Ready never made a secret of his passion for right-wing politics and related causes, both of which got the bearded, barrel-chested former Marine branded a racist, an extremist and a bigot. In a lifetime of moving through mainstream politics in Arizona as well as within the semi-military world of less-established groups, Ready built a reputation for in-your-face confrontations, founding an armed volunteer group dedicated to patrolling the Mexico border and ending the smuggling of illegal immigrants and drugs.

On Wednesday, Ready entered a Gilbert, Ariz., home and opened fire, killing four people, including a 15-month-old girl, said Gilbert Police Sgt. Bill Balafas. Ready then turned a handgun on himself, ending his life at age 39, the sergeant said.

Ready, known as “J.T.,” lived in the house with Lisa Lynn Mederos, 47; Mederos’ daughter, Amber Nieve Mederos, 23; and the daughter’s boyfriend, Jim Franklin Hiott, 24. Amber’s toddler daughter, Lily Lynn Mederos, died while being treated at a hospital.

The shootings were described by Balafas in an interview with The Times as an apparent case of domestic violence, although what set off the incident was still under investigation.

“There was an argument inside the residence,” Balafas said Thursday, “but we don’t know about what.” Police have responded to other domestic-disturbance calls at the residence, he said, though there were no immediate details about those.

“We never had a homicide investigation this large here before,” Balafas said.

In addition to the weapon that Ready used, another handgun and a shotgun were found at the home, Balafas said. The Joint Terrorism Task Force and FBI agents removed military-grade munitions and two barrels of chemicals found behind the home, authorities said.

Ready was best known as the founder of the U.S. Border Guard, a volunteer group whose members dress in military garb and armor and carry weapons while on patrol for illegal immigrants in the desert area near the border.

In a posting on its website, the group, which is not affiliated with the government, mourned what it called “a senseless act of violence. … God bless you, J.T. You will be fiercely missed.”

Ready earlier this year set up an exploratory committee to run for the office of sheriff in Arizona’s Pinal County. A Facebook page titled “JT Ready for Sheriff” carried a message from the administrator that said there were unconfirmed reports that “a cartel assassination squad murdered JT Ready and several of his friends and family this afternoon in Gilbert Arizona.”

Ready was also a former member of the National Socialist Movement, a neo-Nazi group that advocates citizenship only for those of “pure White blood,” with “no Jew or homosexual” allowed to be a citizen. Ready left the group around 2010 to pursue more traditional politics such as his run for sheriff, said Duke Schneider, a National Socialist Movement spokesman in a telephone interview with The Times.

“He was a complete gentleman,” Schneider said of Ready. ”He was very militaristic by nature, politically minded by nature and someone commonly referred to as a people person…. We were all very surprised by the shooting. Ready was generally a person who always appeared extremely stable-minded, never in a bad mood. It’s a tremendous shock.”

Ready’s opponents were less kind. In its profile, the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, described him as a white supremacist. The Alabama-based civil rights organization said Ready apparently got his start in politics as president of the Mesa Community College Republican Club and became increasingly involved in local issues in the early 2000s.

According to the center’s biography, Ready received a bad-conduct discharge from the Marines in 1996, after being court-martialed twice — once for larceny and going AWOL, and once for conspiracy and assault. The site also lists a 1992 criminal conviction for property damage and assault after he and a friend destroyed a car mirror with a baseball bat.

Ready ran for political office at least twice in Mesa and once as a write-in candidate for U.S. Senate. In 2004, he ran in the Republican primary for a House seat from District 18. In 2006, he ran for Mesa City Council from a heavily Hispanic district and finished second among four candidates.

A year later, Ready caused a commotion at a Mesa City Council meeting when the mayor denied him permission to speak in opposition to a Mesa police detective who was campaigning against hate crimes.

Peoria Bishop Compares Obama to Stalin, Hitler

During the message at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Peoria, Roman Catholic Bishop Daniel Jenky contended social services for Catholics could be eliminated if Obama’s directive to include contraceptives in health insurance continues. Jenky went on to compare the actions to past cultural wars against the Catholic Church. The Anti-Defamation League has demanded an apology.

Peoria Bishop Compares Obama to Stalin, Hitler

Chicago’s Anti-Defamation League wants an apology

By Lisa Balde and Natalie Martinez (nbcchicago.com)

The Diocese of Joliet has not returned calls to NBC Chicago. The Archdiocese of Chicago said they offer religious freedom as something they encourage people to investigate.

Chicago’s Anti-Defamation League calls the comments “not only offensive, but grossly inaccurate and dangerous rhetoric.”

The Anti-Defamation League wants an apology from Peoria’s bishop following a recent homily comparing President Barack Obama’s policies to those of  despots Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

“Remember that in past history other governments have tried to force Christians to huddle and hide only within the confines of their churches like the first disciples locked up in the Upper Room,” Jenky said.

In comparison, he pointed to Otto von Bismarck’s “culture war against the Roman Catholic Church, closing down every Catholic school and hospital, convent and monastery in Imperial Germany.”

“Clemenceau, nicknamed ‘the priest eater,’ tried the same thing in France in the first decade of the 20th Century,” Jenky said. “Hitler and Stalin, at their better moments, would just barely tolerate some churches remaining open, but would not tolerate any competition with the state in education, social services and health care.”

“In clear violation of our First Amendment rights, Barack Obama, with his radical, pro-abortion and extreme secularist agenda, now seems intent on following a similar path,” he said.

“A clergy person with so many people listening to every word should be more responsible and should think twice before making analogies,” said League Regional Director Lonnie Nasatir.

Nasatir told the Chicago Tribune the bishop’s homily trivialized the deaths of six million Jews and others during the Holocaust. He said there are few if any historic parallels to ‘the religious intolerance and anti-Semitism fostered in society by Stalin, and especially Hitler.”

Homemade bomb detonates at Wisconsin Planned Parenthood clinic

I am willing to wager that this wasn’t the work of Muslims. What’s really alarming about this story is that the reporter says that there have been a series of bombings in relation to women’s health issues within the past year. If the attackers were Muslim, this would be all over the news:

Homemade bomb detonates at Wisconsin Planned Parenthood clinic

By Stephen C. Webster (rawstory.com)

A homemade explosive device detonated outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Grand Chute, Wisconsin on Sunday night.

Police are still looking for whoever left the device, which exploded around 7:30 p.m. and caused little damage to the building. Nobody was injured.

The attack is one of a string across the U.S. in recent months.

Amid a heated debate over funding for Planned Parenthood last month, the Fort Worth offices of Texas State Senator Wendy Davis (D) — a strong supporter of the female health program — were attacked with two firebombs. Another clinic in the Dallas area was attacked in a similar manner by a separate person last July.

This video is from NBC 26 in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, broadcast Sunday, April 1, 2012.

Update: A Christian apologist made a youtube video on the Wisconsin bombing, blaming “Jihadi influence” on those members of the public who like Christian extremists for the attack.

Newt Gingrich: It Should ‘Bother’ Obama that People Think He’s Muslim

For Newt Gingrich, in New Hampshire on Wednesday, Shariah is a concern akin to terrorism.

No Islamophobia here right?

Newt Gingrich thinks being a Muslim is a problem and he believes that it should ‘bother’ Obama that people think he’s Muslim. He also blames Obama for people thinking that way.

Can anyone imagine if you replaced Muslim with “Jew” or “Christian”:

Gingrich says it should ‘bother’ Obama that people think he’s Muslim

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is amping up his language on President Obama’s faith and his relationship with Muslims.  Gingrich told ABC News Friday that that he takes the president at his word that he’s a Christian, but finds it “very bizarre” that Obama is “desperately concerned to apologize to Muslim religious fanatics.”

Gingrich said the president’s apology to the Afghan president for the burning Korans by U.S. soldiers happened last month “while they are killing young Americans,” referring to the two Americans killed during protests over the burned books. Gingrich said at the same time, the administration is “going to war against the Catholic Church and against every right-to-life Protestant organization in the country.”

Asked by a member of the press if it concerns him that a large portion of the electorate believes Obama is a Muslim, Gingrich replied, “It should bother the president.”

“Why does the president behave the way that people would think that? You have to ask why would they believe that? It’s not because they’re stupid. It’s because they watch the kind of things I just described to you,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich said Thursday that “Obama’s Muslim friends” would not be reported on by the “elite media,” in a radio interview with Sandy Rios. Gingrich was asked about Rios called the Washington Post’s “two page” report on Rick Santorum’s ties to Catholic organization, Opus Dei. Gingrich used the question to say that the elite media was protecting  Obama from any religious scrutiny.

“You have to understand that the elite media is in the tank for Obama. They are going to do anything that helps re-elect Obama,” Gingrich said. “Do you think you are going to see two pages on Obama’s Muslim friends? Or two pages on the degree to which Obama is consistently apologizing to Islam while attacking the Catholic Church?”

On Wednesday, in Port Charles, La., a man asked Gingrich a question and stated that Obama was a Muslim and a student of Saul Alinsky. Gingrich did not correct the man and later said in an interview with Fox News that he didn’t “have an obligation to go around and correct every single voter about every single topic. I also didn’t agree with him.”

ABC News, 23 March 2012

By Miriam Raftery (eastcountymagazine.org)

March 17, 2012 (Lemon Grove)—Lemon Grove resident Michael John Kobulnicky, 50, a leader in the San Diego Tea Party and former regional director of the Southern California Conservative Party, is under arrest for allegedly kidnapping and raping a local woman on Fiesta Island.

“He dragged her out of the car and sexually assaulted her pretty brutally,” San Diego Police Lt. Andra Brown told ECM news partner 10 News in late February, shortly after the February 25 assault occurred.

On his website, http://www.michaelkobulnickyusa.com, Kobulnicky lists his leadership roles as “currently the co-organizer and public relations representative for the San Diego Tea Party.”

After Kobulnicky’s arrest, the San Diego Tea Party issued a statement indicating that Kobulnicky took leave the group in January for personal reasons and had not been in touch since then, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.  He has been removed from his position while the legal process runs its course, the statement said, adding that “"Our hearts and our thoughts go out to the victim.”

The suspect previously identified himself with the Conservative Party USA. In 2009, he was listed as regional director of the Southern California Conservative Party, according to http://conservativepartyusa.org/bios/kobulnicky.html

According to his website, Kobulnicky  supports Christian values, is a father of five sons, and is co-founder and president of the National Council of Americans, Inc, a nonprofit that helps youths.

He also lists prior employment as faculty at California Miramar University, teacher and coach at Val Verde Unified School District, manager of a landscape design company, and more.

His Facebook page indicates he became engaged in early March and planned to be married in April. Kobulnicky, who is divorced, was accused of domestic violence in 2008, San Diego Superior Court records indicate.

According to police, Kobulnicky offered a ride to a woman walking on Linda Vista Road around 7 p.m. on February 25. But instead of taking her home, he drove to Fiesta Island. There, the 205-pound, 6 ft. 3-inch tall suspect is accused of pulling the victim out of the vehicle and sexually assaulted the 56-year-old woman, then leaving her on the island.

He is charged with rape, kidnapping, and forcible sex with a foreign object.  Evidence includes surveillance video shot at a local convenience store shortly before the kidnapping occurred.  Kobulnicky is being held without bail pending arraignment on Monday.

Wannabe Tea Party politician unleashes racist Facebook screed against President Obama

Jules Manson calls for assassination of First Family

BY Nancy Dillon

Monday, December 19 2011, 2:18 PM

A rabid Tea Party wannabe politician in California called for the assassination of President Obama and his "monkey children" in a recent Facebook rant - and then defended his right to do so Monday.

Jules Manson, who failed miserably in his 2011 bid for a City Council seat in Carson, Calif., urged the sickening reprisal, saying Obama's support of a revised military authorization bill last week was an act of "treason" that "eroded" constitutional protections.

"It must be countered with assassinations onto them and their children," he wrote in the original posting that has since been scrubbed from his Facebook profile.

"Assassinate the f----n (N-word) and his monkey children," he prodded, according to a screen grab obtained by YourBlackWorld.com.

An angry backlash quickly ensued, and Manson, 48, toned down the vile rhetoric Monday while defending his right to spew hate.

"Once you have taken the position that anyone should be imprisoned for careless emotionally driven remarks that had no real substance, you deserve what your government has become," he wrote in the new Facebook post.

"All I can really say is to be careful what you wish for because setting such a precedence can come back to bite you," he warned.

"I have felt deeply regretful and apologized for my past mistakes. Can you do the same?" he asked his followers.

No one answered a telephone number listed for Manson's residence in a Carson trailer park Monday.

An enthusiastic supporter of Tea Party pioneer Ron Paul, Manson described himself as a mechanical engineer bent on fiscal conservatism when he announced his city council candidacy earlier this year.

Rising taxes and lease rates at his mobile home park motivated his run, he said.

He received just 550 votes, less than 4%, according to local newspaper Random Lengths.

Manson, who changed his first name from Julio, included a photo of Obama dressed as Hitler in a rambling February blog posting announcing his run and claiming support of racial equality.

"As soon as we shed our ideological labels, conditioned beliefs, and see the humanity beyond our pigments we find that in full frontal view of the naked truth we are all united in the same mission of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," he wrote.
